Fishing Line

Monofilament Line (Mono)

Think of mono as the all-purpose, user-friendly line. It’s stretchy, forgiving, and easy to handle.

Pros:

  • Stretchy = acts like a shock absorber (great for treble hook baits)
  • Cheap and easy to find
  • Knots easily and holds them well
  • Low visibility in the water (especially clear mono)

Cons:

  • That stretch can reduce sensitivity—harder to feel soft bites
  • Not super strong for its diameter (can break on big fish or in thick cover)
  • Breaks down over time from sun exposure (UV damage)

Best For:

  • Crankbaits or reaction baits (stretch helps keep fish hooked)
  • Beginner setups

Braided Line (Braid)

Braid is like the high-strength, no-stretch powerhouse of fishing lines. It’s made from woven synthetic fibers and is incredibly tough for its size.

Pros:

  • Zero stretch = super sensitive—feel every bump, bite, and tick
  • Super strong for its diameter (great for pulling fish out of thick weeds)
  • Long-lasting (doesn’t degrade from sun or water)
  • Cuts through vegetation like a weed whacker

Cons:

  • Very visible in clear water (can spook fish)
  • Knots can slip unless tied right (Palomar or doubled-up knots work best)
  • No shock absorption—can rip hooks out if you don’t use a softer rod
  • Expensive compared to mono

Best For:

  • Frogging, flipping, and pitching into heavy cover
  • Heavy vegetation or muddy water
  • Bottom contact baits where sensitivity is key (like jigs or worms)

Pro Tip: Use a Combo (Braid + Leader)

A lot of anglers run braid with a fluorocarbon or mono leader tied with an FG knot or double uni. That way, you get the best of both worlds:

  • Sensitivity + strength from braid
  • Stealth and stretch from the leader
